Reflections on the 2025 Union Education Awards

On June 20th, 2025, the University of Derby held its annual Union Education Awards. It is always a privilege to attend an evening that recognises the dedication, talent, and commitment of our academic and professional staff to enhancing the student experience – as well as the students who were nominated across a wide range of categories.

I was both humbled and honoured to be named this year’s Postgraduate Supervisor of the Year. Following last year’s recognition as Personal Academic Tutor of the Year, this continued acknowledgement means a great deal to me. Supporting our students – particularly those navigating the complexities of a Master’s degree in Health Psychology – is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role. It is a privilege to guide students as they explore global and regional health challenges and produce impactful research that has the potential to benefit the lives of others (i.e., vaccination uptake, cancer screening). To have that support recognised is something I truly value.

While I am deeply grateful for the award, I am equally mindful that such achievements do not happen in isolation. I would like to thank my colleagues – the University of Derby is fortunate to have a community of staff who are deeply committed to the success and wellbeing of our students. From personal tutors and module leaders to support staff and professional services teams, the collective contribution is vital to the university’s success, and their impact cannot be overstated. I also extend my warm congratulations to all of this year’s nominees and award recipients.

To all ‘my’ students – past and present – thank you. This award is not just a personal honour (despite my name being on the trophy!), but a reflection of the inspiring work you do each and every day. My goal has always been simple: to support you in realising your full potential and to help you see that research and publication are not distant or unachievable goals – they are entirely within your reach. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to work with such talented and driven individuals of whom I learn so much. Supporting your growth is my privilege, and I’m so proud to be part of your journey.
